Galloping Toward Greatness: French Racer Makes a Difference

French Elementary fifth-grader Lucie Mae Benson is making leaps and bounds in her community. Known among friends, family, and school staff as someone who balances her studies and numerous extracurriculars, Lucie Mae dedicates her time to volunteering, horseback riding, and creative activities.

Lucie Mae's passion for helping others led her to volunteer at a local therapy barn, Inspiration Ranch. This organization is an equine-assisted therapy program for children and adults with physical, emotional, and social challenges.

"I help with exercising the tiny ponies there," she said. "That way, they’re ready before the therapy clients come and ride them."

Her duties include preparing the ponies and even taking on stable maintenance. For Lucie Mae, volunteering has brought a new perspective on life.

"I get to see how blessed I am, and volunteering reminds me to be grateful; it feels great to make a difference in the lives of others,” Lucie Mae said.

Her passion for horses started when she was young, and she has been riding since she was four. Lucie Mae competes with her pony, Happy Place, aka “Giggles,” in various events. She is grateful for competitions that allow her to grow alongside her pony.

"It’s fun seeing all the other riders and how they ride," she said. "I love going on this journey with my pony."

Lucie Mae’s talent for riding is apparent, and she has captured the following awards and accolades: Texas Pony Championship Reserve Champion, Southwest Showdown Reserve Champion, Great Southwest Fall Classic Champion, Great Southwest Monster Mash, obtaining first, second, and third place ribbons, and the Great Southwest Autumn Classic Champion.

With a rigorous riding schedule, Lucie Mae spends multiple days a week at the barn and even on weekends.

Beyond riding and volunteering, Lucie Mae is also an active member of her school’s safety patrol, where she helps raise flags and assists others during the school day. Her artistic side shines through her participation in choir and art projects, which she enjoys for the chance to be creative.

Even with a packed schedule, Lucie Mae keeps up with her A+ average in Gifted & Talented academics thanks to support from her parents. She sometimes leans on them for help in certain subjects and credits them, along with her teachers, for always being there for her.

“My parents and teachers have been really helpful to me,” she said. “I know I couldn’t be where I am without them.”

Looking to the future, Lucie Mae has her sights set on new goals. In addition to advancing her riding skills, she admitted she’d like to try picking up tennis and golf. Her goal this year is to keep improving and reach new heights with riding.

Way to go, Lucie Mae! Your #KleinFamily is so proud of you for all your hard work and the difference you make in our community!
